Recently I got to experience one of the best traveling experiences ever! something iv always wanted to do but never thought would happen. I always like traveling in style and in luxury, and if you are like me, you will love traveling on a luxury train. The name of this train is rovosrail, Since its establishment in 1989, Rovos Rail has earned an international reputation for its luxury travel experiences. They offer bespoke train journeys lasting from 48 hours to 15 days, Rovos Rail travels to the continent’s greatest destinations like Zimbabwe and Namibia just to name a few, with a variety of exciting off-train excursions.
All the journeys start from Pretoria, where guests are welcomed by friendly staff with refreshments and a red carpet to walk on, they have a lovely waiting room where guests can have canapes, tea, champagne, etc. Before going on the train the CEO does a quick presentation of how he started the company and its history.
The journey we took was for 4 days, departing from Pretoria to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, it was a very special trip as I took my mum with me, who I hadn’t seen since 2020, the perfect mother-daughter bonding trip. Everything on the trip was beyond my expectations, we had a spacious suite with a shower, and a wardrobe with lots of space for all our clothing, we also had a desk, a mini fridge, and a double bed. The train had a dining area, bar and lounge area, and an outside lounge area as well.
Each day we had breakfast from 7 am-10 am, lunch at 2 pm and dinner at 7 pm and the guests could choose whether to join or not, we also had hostesses that we could call should we need anything in our rooms, they would also do our laundry and our beds or take our clothes for ironing, literally, the only thing we did was eat, sleep and relax which was exactly what we needed. Each day after dinner we would get fresh water and some chocolates laid down for us on our bed, the bed already readied for us to just jump in and sleep. Iv never felt so spoilt in my life!
If you are a foodie like me you will absolutely love being on a Rovos train, their food is the best quality and one of the most delicious meals iv ever had, and trust me I eat out a lot and nothing comes close to the food we had here. Breakfast is A la carte, lunch is a three-course meal, and dinner is as well, each meal is paired with different wines. Whenever you need a refill the staff is always there to top you up, its safe to say you can drink as much as you can handle.
One might ask what you can do while on the train, I read a lot as they have a little library where you can choose books to read, I also brought with my Kindle, and you can also play games or sit on the outside carriage and take in the beauty while chatting to other guests, also an important factor is that they don’t have wifi, which I think is good so you can completely switch off and be present in the moment.
They also offer amazing excursions, on this particular journey we visited a safari called Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, which I could say was the highlight for me as I love game drives and being immersed in nature and watching wild animals in their natural habitat. The game drive was for about 4 hours and we were welcomed with refreshments and delicious tapas after the drive.
In conclusion, this was one of the most luxurious and exciting trips, and I would highly recommend anyone who wants to experience real luxury and tranquility on a train to book their tickets for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
